Vaginal Bleeding During Pregnancy: What's Normal, What's Not

Q. What are some causes of normal vaginal bleeding during pregnancy?

A. There are a few normal reasons for vaginal bleeding.

* Implantation of your fertilized egg causes slight spotting in a minority of woman. If it happens, it will be near the time you would normally have your period. This bleeding should be very light spotting and last for a day or two. [Spotting: very light bleeding similar to the end of your period.]

* Cervix is more prone to bleed as blood flow is naturally increased during pregnancy. That said, anything that may touch or irritate the cervix can cause bleeding. Sex, gynecological exam, pap smear, physical work, exercise. This bleeding should only spot and last for a day or two.

* If you notice spotting after exercising or working, ease off a bit and see if the spotting stops. Keep a log of your workouts and spotting frequency. This way you know how much you can work or exercise.

* If you are spotting for more than two days, or see an increase in the amount, or do not see a cause of the bleeding, contact your health provider.

* At around 37 weeks, a mucous plug may come out tinged with blood. This is an early sign of labor.

Q. What are some causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding during pregnancy?

A. As the cervix is more engorged, STD’s or any type of vaginal infection may cause bleeding. Infections irritate the cervix causing bleeding or spotting for more than a day or two. Bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, Chlamydia, Herpes are some common infections that may cause prolonged bleeding. See your health provider. They will do a pap or wet mount slide prep to see if an infection is present and treat accordingly.

Spontaneous abortion is a cause of abnormal bleeding. Of the 10% to 25% of women who report spotting during the 1st trimester, 20% to 50% of those will spontaneously abort. If you cannot pin-point a cause of the spotting or it progresses, see your health provider.

Pain with spotting may indicate an ectopic pregnancy or early signs of miscarriage. Pain and spotting is not normal. An ectopic pregnancy must be terminated for the woman’s safety. Ultrasound can confirm or rule out an ectopic pregnancy. This occurs in the first trimester and occurs in 1.5% of all pregnancies.

Abnormal bleeding in pregnancy may indicate placenta problems (eg. placenta previa during any trimester which presents as painless bleeding) or premature labor. Again, if bleeding is more than spotting, increasing in amount or duration, call your health provider.

Q. What is too much bleeding?

A. Duration or quantity are the keys here. If spotting is happening for more than two days and you cannot pin-point a normal cause, contact your health provider.

If bleeding is increasing beyond spotting, it is necessary to contact your health provider. There does not have to be pain associated. If painless bleeding is present, do contact your provider.

If you think it is too much bleeding and you need reassurance, call. Relaxation is very important for a healthy mom and baby. One cannot relax when unsure. Don’t be tough. Call. Your health provider is there to assist and educate you during this amazing time.

GOOD NEWS! ;)
An ultrasound that shows a heartbeat between 7 - 11 weeks, the chances of continuing the pregnancy are better than 90%

Weight Loss Myth - Weight Loss While Pregnant Or Nursing is Unsafe

Weight loss at any time in your life is never unsafe - IF it is approached with healthy foundations and not in response to your emotions. "I'm FAT. I Have to lose weight NOW! is emotional. With this kind of thinking you will be tempted to do one of those disposable, temporary diets that usually are severely limited in their caloric intake and missing some essential nutrition.

Whenever anyone takes on a weight loss program to lose excess fat, they must come to terms with the fact that they will be in this for the long haul. Real weight loss programs consist of healthy balanced meals that anyone can use (unless you have specific allergies or limitations imposed by your physician). So it stands to reason that a nursing mother, even a pregnant woman can safely lose weight by eating smaller meals of real foods.

Weight loss is something a woman must undertake to gain over all health. When approached with an attitude that you are going to eat like this for the most part for the rest of your life, then weight loss becomes part of the natural course of things. You lose weight eventually when you eat smaller, more balanced meals.

As it happens, most of us want to lose it all now. We see our bulges and flabby tummies and we react by severely cutting our food intake. This causes more weight gain as the body feels it is starving and conserves food as fat.

What anyone, pregnant or nursing or otherwise, must realize is that weight loss is going to be the result of a conscious choice to make the right eating choices and eating on a regular basis and coupling it with sensible regular exercise. There is no short cut to a slim body. No "nine pounds in 14 days diet" will work in the long run.

True weight loss depends on you making a commitment to establishing good habits. Get serious about eating good food and allow yourself planned treats. Take up walking or biking on a regular basis. These are things that anyone can do to start on the way toward a healthy weight.

The key is to not react to your fat but respond by planning to lose safely no matter how long it takes. So, Mama, be patient. Be consistent. Make better food choices. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with healthy snacks in between. Walk wherever you can. Take up a favorite sport for exercise. Above all, enjoy life and let the weight take care of itself one pound at a time.

Can You Really Trust A Conception Chart?

Almost everyone in the family gets excited when the mother is conceiving a child and everyone would want to know as well whether the baby’s a girl or a boy. Upon knowing the baby’s gender, most couples rush to the store to buy clothes and other stuff for the baby. This is especially true for first-time parents.

Today, most couples rely on the doctor’s ultrasound findings to know their unborn baby’s gender. The picture of the baby’s body tissues that is shown in the machine’s screen are outlined by the echo patterns produced by the bouncing of the high-energy sound waves on the internal tissues and organs.

It’s quite interesting to note that long before this modern imaging method was invented, the Chinese people in particular have already devised a method to know beforehand the gender of the baby. They use the conception chart.

Conception chart has also been referred to as Chinese gender chart, Chinese birth gender chart and Chinese gender selection birth chart. This method of knowing the gender of the expected baby is an ancient method, discovered in the thirteenth century in a place near Beijing, China. It was buried for more than seven centuries in a tomb that is believed to belong to a noble Chinese. If you happen to go to Beijing, you can find that antique Chinese conception chart in the Beijing Institute of Science.

This chart has two variables: the month the baby was conceived and the age of the mother. It looks like a multiplication table where rows and columns are headed by the two variables. In the cells below or beside the column and row headings are letters “B” and “G” that stand for boy and girl respectively. The months can be placed either on top of and across the grid while the ages are on the left side downwards or vice versa.

One can determine the gender of the baby by cross-referencing the first variable with the second. So for example, if an 18-year old mother conceives in September, the baby is a boy as predicted by the conception chart. If a 30-year old mother conceives in May, the baby is a girl. When the mother is 45 years old and conceives in the month of January, her baby is a girl.

To date, scientists still remain skeptic about its accuracy as no scientific study has ever verified it yet. Science maintains that gender is determined by the baby’s chromosomes. Those who believe and use the old Chinese conception chart method though claim that the conception chart is 93% accurate.

Trying this method can be fun. Just like in a guessing game, finding out that the chart’s prediction is actually correct after you or your wife have given birth gives you a feeling of victory. You can find lots of copies of this chart online so just browse through the Internet to get one and predict your child’s gender in no time. But if you want a very accurate and reliable answer, it would be best to go to your obstetrician for an ultrasound.

Conception Process

The process of conception is a simply wonderful God’s gift. When you understand the conception process better, you can get pregnant or prevent it more easily.

Conception Process for women

Ovulation is the process by which a mature egg breaks away from the ovary. It moves down the fallopian tube and waits to get fertilized. If it does get fertilized, conception is said to have occurred, i.e. a baby has formed.

Thus, if you want to conceive, you should know when the egg is waiting to get fertilized so that the sperm can be released to meet it. Ovulation may occur at any time from the 11th to 21st day after the first day of the menstrual period. Check out a website like www.babycenter.com and use their ovulation calculator to calculate your ovulation dates. Knowing your ovulation dates is sure to help you in your conception process.

Conception Process for Men

When a man has intercourse with a woman during her ovulation period, he can father a child. This is why it is important that both the partners understand the conception process clearly.

Other factors affecting conception process

There are a multitude of other factors that affect the conception process too. They are listed below:

i) The man should produce active and healthy sperm.

ii) Use of drugs and alcohol should be stopped by both the partners if they want to conceive. If any one of them were already heavily into it, conception may be difficult.

iii) Smoking affects fertility.

iv) It is not a good idea to wait longer to have children. The more aged the woman becomes; the more difficult it becomes to conceive.

v) There should be no blockages in a woman’s fallopian tubes and the egg should be able to flow through it easily.

Problems in Conception Process

While there may be many reasons why you may not be getting pregnant, one most common reason might be that you might not be having intercourse on your fertility date. Since an egg can be fertilized only 12 to 24 hours after it is released from the ovary, it becomes all the more difficult to conceive. Sperm can live inside the female body for up to 3 days. If you are still experiencing problems in conception, meet a fertility specialist.

Get into Baby Shape

Fewer and fewer women who are between the ages of 20 and 34 years old are living a lifestyle they should before becoming pregnant. If you are thinking about having a baby, then there are many things you can do to help your body be ready to have a baby. The better health you are in before pregnancy, the healthier you and your baby will be during and after the pregnancy. Studies have shown that healthier you are the better your chances of having an easier pregnancy and delivery improves.

In order to get into shape, make sure you are taking a multivitamin with plenty of calcium, folic acid, and iron. Folic acid is especially important to women who are thinking about becoming pregnant. Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps to prevent spinal cord and brain defects. You can also eat foods that are high in Folate, the natural form of folic acid. You can find Folate in dried beans and leafy green vegetables such as spinach. Doctors recommend that women who are thinking about becoming pregnant should take 400 micrograms of folic acid a day. Once you become pregnant, doctors recommend that women take 1000 micrograms a day. Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin, so any excess will be flushed from your system. As part of your multivitamins, you should find one that contains Omega-3 fatty acid.

Research has suggested that women who take Omeg-3 fatty acids help the baby's brain development. A study found that mothers who had higher levels of the fatty acid in their system when she gave birth, their babies had better attention spans than those mothers who had lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. This fatty acid is very important for a baby's brain development. During the first two years of a baby's life, their brain is developing very rapidly.

You can find omega-3 fatty acid in Atlantic salmon, Pacific cid, tuna, and omega-3 fortified eggs. Fish is the best source for omega-3 fatty acid. Where it can be difficult to eat enough fish to get the recommended amount in your diet, you can take a supplement to fill in the hole. Another thing that women who are thinking about becoming pregnant should do is to get in a best shape as possible. This may mean losing some weight.

Women who are overweight have more complications than women who are at a healthy weight. Experts say that being at an ideal weight can improve your chances of becoming pregnant. Talk with your doctor to see what a healthy weight is for you. If your doctor says to lose a few pounds, it is best done by eating a balanced diet of lean meats, whole-grains, fruits, vegetables, and drinking lots of water. You also need to include an exercise program that combines weight training and cardio exercises. Weight training exercises build muscle and cardio exercises build endurance. Building lean muscle will help you to burn more calories when you are done exercising. Make sure you begin a routine that you can continue once you become pregnant. A recent study found that women who exercised while they were pregnant helped with the baby's development.

Taking a multivitamin supplement, exercising, and eating a balanced diet are three easy things women can do to create a healthy lifestyle if they are thinking about becoming pregnant. Studies indicate that eating a proper diet can improve your chances of conception.

What You Need to Know About Tubal Pregnancy

What is a tubal pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy, commonly known as a tubal pregnancy, is a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants itself somewhere other than the uterus. It is referred to as a tubal pregnancy because 95% of ectopic pregnancies occur when the fertilized egg is unable to travel all the way through the fallopian tube to the uterus, and therefore implants itself in the tube. Of all ectopic pregnancies, 1.5% are abdominal, 0.5% are ovarian, and 0.03% are cervical. None of these places are suited for a growing baby. As the fetus grows, it can eventually burst the organ that contains it, causing severe internal bleeding, and endangering the mother's life. Unfortunately, a tubal pregnancy will never develop into a live birth. Although there have been advances in surgical technology that have caused the death rate due to tubal pregnancy to drop since 1970, there is still a death rate of about 1 out of 2000, with about 40-50 women dying each year in the U.S.

What causes tubal pregnancy?

There are many reasons why an egg may become lodged in the fallopian tube. It is most often caused by an infection or inflammation of the tube that partially or entirely blocks the passage. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is the most common of these infections. Endometriosis, when cells from the lining of the uterus detach and grow elsewhere in the body, can cause blockages. Scar tissue from previous pelvic or fallopian surgery can also lead to tubal pregnancy. Less frequently, abnormal growths or birth defects can alter the shape of the tube and obstruct the egg's progress.

How will I know if I am having a tubal pregnancy?

It can be difficult to recognize symptoms of tubal pregnancy since many of the early signs mirror those of a normal pregnancy, such as missed periods, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, or frequent urination. Some of the symptoms more specific to tubal
pregnancy are:
* Pain in your lower belly
* Slight bleeding from vagina
* One-sided pain in your stomach
* Shoulder pain (which may be caused by internal bleeding irritating your diaphragm when you breathe)
* Bladder or bowel problems
* Feeling light-headed or faint, sometimes accompanied by paleness, increased pulse, diarrhea, and falling blood pressure (caused by blood loss)
* Abnormal bleeding (heavier or lighter than usual and prolonged, or dark and watery, almost like prune juice)
* Lower back pain
If you experience any of these symptoms you should go directly to the emergency room. If you arrive at the hospital complaining about abdominal pains, you will most likely be given a pregnancy test. Urine pregnancy tests are not necessarily the best pregnancy tests, but they are fast. Speed can be crucial in dealing with a tubal pregnancy. If the pregnancy test comes back positive then your doctor will probably perform a quantitative hCG test to measure the amount of human chorionic gonadotropin in your body. hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta which shows up in the blood and urine as early as 10 days after conception. Its levels double every day for the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Lower-than-expected hCG levels could indicate a tubal pregnancy. You will be given a pelvic exam as well, to find the areas causing pain, check for an enlarged, pregnant uterus, or locate any masses in your abdomen. The doctors will probably also perform an ultrasound examination, which would show if the uterus contained a developing fetus or determine whether there are masses growing elsewhere in the abdomen. Unfortunately, the ultrasound may not be able to detect every tubal pregnancy. There is also a more rarely used test for tubal pregnancy, called culdocentesis, which is used to check for internal bleeding. This test is performed by inserting a needle into the space at the very top of the vagina, behind the uterus and in front of the rectum. If there is blood or fluid found there, it most likely comes from a ruptured tubal pregnancy.

What can be done about my tubal pregnancy?

Treatment for a tubal pregnancy will depend on its size and location, and on whether or not you would like the ability to conceive again. If caught early enough, a tubal pregnancy may be able to be treated with an injection of methotrexate, which would dissolve the fertilized egg and allow it to be reabsorbed into the body. This non-surgical approach results in minimal scarring of the pelvic organs. A tubal pregnancy that is further along will likely require surgery to be removed. In the past, this operation would have required a very large incision across the lower abdomen, which may still be necessary in cases of emergency or severe internal injury. However, modern technology has bestowed upon us an alternative method of removal. In many cases, the vtubal pregnancy can be removed using laparoscopy, a much less invasive surgical procedure. The surgeon makes a small incision in the lower abdomen and inserts a laparoscope, a long, hollow tube with a lighted end. This allows the surgeon to see internal organs and insert other instruments as need. The tubal pregnancy is then removed, and the damaged organs are repaired or removed. Regardless of which procedure is used, the doctor will want to continue seeing you regularly, to monitor your hCG levels, which should return to zero. This may take up to twelve weeks, but if the hCG levels do not decline, it could mean that some of the ectopic tissue was missed and may need to be removed using methotrexate or additional surgery. How will this affect my future pregnancies? About a third of women with a previous tubal pregnancy will have trouble conceiving again. This depends mainly on the total amount of damage and surgery that was done. If the fallopian tubes remain intact, chances for a successful pregnancy in the future are about 60%. Even with only one fallopian tube, chances can be greater than 40%. The risk of a repeat tubal pregnancy is increased with each subsequent tubal pregnancy. After your first one, you face about a 15% chance of having another. Am I at risk of having a tubal pregnancy? Those most at risk of having a tubal pregnancy are women between the ages of 35 and 45 who have had a PID, a previous tubal pregnancy, surgery on a fallopian tube, or infertility problems or medication to stimulate ovulation. Some birth control methods may also increase your chances for a tubal pregnancy. If you become pregnant while using progesterone intrauterine devices (IUDs), progesterone-only oral contraceptives, or the morning after pill, you may be more likely to have a tubal pregnancy.

If you think that you may be at risk of tubal pregnancy, talk to your doctor about it before attempting to conceive. Although there is nothing that can be done to prevent tubal pregnancy, if monitored closely it can be detected early. If you are pregnant and experience any of the symptoms of tubal pregnancy, contact your doctor immediately. Tubal pregnancy is just one of those things that you want to have checked out, even if you only have so much as a hunch. It can't hurt to be sure, and it may save your life.
